SIUE's Gruenkemeyer Crowned GLVC Champion
SPRINGFIELD - Kacy Gruenkemeyer (Salem) did what no other Southern Illinois University Edwardsville golfer has been able to do before. The junior carded a final round 79 and won the Great Lakes Valley Conference individual title Monday by one stroke.
It was the first time a Cougar player had even made it to the conference tournament's top five, a position which earns players an automatic All-Conference selection. Gruenkemeyer did it in style.
After posting a 36-hole total of 162 early, Gruenkemeyer and her teammates had to wait at Piper Glen Golf Course for scores from Quincy, Indianapolis and Northern Kentucky before learning her final place.
Gruenkemeyer edged out Kim Moore, of Indianapolis, who shot the best round of the tournament with a 74 on Monday. Gruenkemeyer and Moore were joined in All-Conference honors by Briana Berryman of Northern Kentucky (164), Kim Keyer-Scott of Northern Kentucky (169) and Nicole Crawford of Quincy (171).
SIUE junior Brittany Auld (Nashville) and freshman Brittany Hood (Coulterville) tied for 19th at 186. Deanna Bock (Edwardsville) shot a two-round total of 187. Kristi Novak (Highland) followed with a 197 for 34th place.
As a team, SIUE placed fourth with a 721 behind champion Northern Kentucky (687), Indianapolis (711) and Quincy (717).
