Head Coach Wendy Hedberg
Head Coach Wendy Hedberg completed her 29th season at the helm of the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's basketball team in 2007-2008. She announced in last August that this would be her final season as the Cougars' head coach. Since taking over the head coaching position in 1979, Hedberg has led the Cougars to an overall record of 453-350. Since joining the Great Lakes Valley Conference in 1994, Hedberg's squads have compiled a record of 148-109. Five of Hedberg's teams have advanced to the NCAA Tournament (1994, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2007). That includes the 2006-2007 season when SIUE eclipsed the 20-win mark and earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament. With All-American Amber Shelton leading the team in scoring and Whitney Sykes adding her record-breaking touch from three-point land and the free throw line, Coach Hedberg was named the Coach of the Year in Division II by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association. While at SIUE, Hedberg has coached not only the school's leading scorer and three-time All-American Misi Clark (1997-2001) but also three other Cougars who earned All-American honors -- Lori Sebastian (1990-91), LeAnn Bryan (1993-94) and Kim Lowe (1998-99). Shelton added her name to the list in 2006-2007 with a 19.4 scoring average. A native of Arlington Heights, Ill., Hedberg attended Hersey High School. Hedberg continued her education at Western Illinois University where she was an All-American shortstop on the softball team and a standout on the basketball court. Hedberg was recognized for her achievements at WIU as she was named to the Western Illinois Hall of Fame. Hedberg graduated from WIU in 1974 with a bachelor's degree in physical education. From there, Hedberg moved on to Indiana State University where she received a master's degree with a specialization in athletic training. |
