Cougars Fall at Ferris State
BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - Ferris State handed Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's basketball its first loss of the season Friday, defeating the Cougars 77-69.
That was despite a 29-point effort from SIUE's Amber Shelton. The Cougar senior shot 11 of 26 from the field, grabbed eight rebounds and tied for the team lead in assists with five.
SIUE, now 2-1, fell behind at halftime 34-31. Whitney Sykes tied the score with a three-pointer on the Cougars' first shot of the second half. Ferris State's Katie Loosvelt countered with her own three-pointer to put the Bulldogs ahead once again. This time, it would be for good.
Ferris State's Rachel Folcik led her team with 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting. She also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Ferris State guard Teghan Thelen also finished in double figures with 19 points.
Sykes was SIUE's only other player scoring in double figures with 15 points.
SIUE now plays Lake Superior State in Big Rapids, Mich., Saturday at 3 p.m. CT.
