Bradley Holds Off Cougars
PEORIA, Ill. - Skye Johnson hit two free throws with seven seconds left as Bradley University held off Southern Illinois University Edwardsville 69-66 in women's exhibition college basketball Saturday.
Whitney Sykes' three-point attempt to tie the score at the buzzer fell short.
The Cougars led at halftime 32-31 and were up by one on a pair of free throws by Elyse Morris with 3:44 left to play. Bradley jumped ahead on scores from Raisa Taylor and Kelly Krumwiede, holding the Cougars at bay. Johnson drew a foul with seven seconds that put Bradley up by three.
Amber Shelton powered SIUE's offense with 32 points on 13-of-19 shooting. Shelton's 17 points in the first half gave the Cougars the halftime lead.
Krumweide led Bradley with 18 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Taylor added 17 points off the bench. Bradley took advantage of SIUE on the boards, garnering 18 offensive rebounds and outscoring the Cougars on second-chance points 26-10.
SIUE now looks forward to the start of the regular season on Nov. 16 at the Central Missouri Tournament. The Cougars play the host Jennies in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
