Cougars Dropped by Panthers
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's basketball team was cold from the field tonight as the Drury University Panthers dealt the Cougars a tough 94-64 loss tonight.
SIUE shot 22 for 58 from the field (37.9 percent) as Drury torched the nets with its 37-for-63 (58.7 percent) performance. Sixth-ranked Drury improved to 24-2 overall and 16-2 in the GLVC, running its winning streak to 15 games.
After Elyse Morris (Prophetstown) hit a three pointer at the 14:57 mark to make the score 10-8 and bring the Cougars within two, that would be the closest the Cougars would come the rest of the night.
Amber Shelton (Edwardsville) led the Cougar offense tonight with 25 points, going 7 for 14 from the field and 11 of 13 from the free throw line.
Jessie Stapleton (Chillicothe) and Whitney Sykes (Pontoon Beach) each added 10 points for the Cougars. Stapleton also had seven rebounds.
Lindsey Ballweg led Drury with a game-high 31 points, going 3-3 from beyond the arc. Molly Carter chipped in 16 points.
SIUE now looks forward to Saturday when it takes on Rockhurst. The Cougars and Hawks will tip-off at 1 p.m. in the Vadalabene Center. SIUE, 16-10 overall and 9-9 in the GLVC, will need at least a victory and some help on the final day of the regular season to gain a berth in the GLVC Tournament.
