February 21, 2008 Cougars Top USI 62-59 EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Amy Austin hit a pair of free throws with one second left Thursday as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's basketball edged Southern Indiana 62-59. Southern Indiana had two chances to take in the lead in the final seconds but missed both opportunities and then fouled Austin with one second left. USI fell to 9-15 overall and 4-12 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Amber Shelton led all scorers with 17 points but struggled from the field, hitting 6 of 21 shots and 5 of 11 attempts from the free throw line. Whitney Sykes turned in 12 points and a team-leading eight rebounds for SIUE, which improved to 16-9 overall and 9-8 in the GLVC. The Cougars led by four at halftime 36-32. The game went back and forth late with seven lead changes in the game. Jasmine Baines powered the attack for the Screaming Eagles with 15 points and 10 rebounds. SIUE's bench proved to be the difference with a 15-4 edge. Kara Frandsen provided a pair of first-half three-pointers in the win. SIUE is now idle until next Thursday when it plays host to Drury at the Vadalabene Center. Tip-off time is 5:30 p.m. -siue- |
