SIUE Prepares for UMSL and Missouri S&T
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- The focus for Southern Illinois University Edwardsville turns to two Missouri schools this week at Missouri-St. Louis and Missouri Science and Technology.
SIUE, 14-7 overall and 7-6 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play, is coming off of a 0-2 road trip against Lewis and UW-Parkside. Amber Shelton (Edwardsville), No. 4 in the nation in scoring at 22.2 points per game. led the Cougars in both contests with 31 against Lewis and 22 against UW-Parkside. Shelton also became the 18th player in school history to pass 1,000 career points at SIUE.
This week features the Cougars' second meeting of the season against UMSL and MST.
In their first meeting this season, the Cougars outpaced UMSL 83-70. Shelton, Jessie Stapleton (Chillicothe), Brittany Imig (Joshua, Texas), and Elyse Morris (Prophetstown) each scored in double figures. Stapleton had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
For Thursday's game, Coach Wendy Hedberg said that ball pressure and getting into the passing lanes are the keys to being successful.
"We need to pressure the ball more than we have been. We also need to contest every pass and fill the passing lanes so that we are right there to make a play," said Hedberg.
SIUE leads the all-time series between the two schools 32-15. Tip-off is 5:30 pm at UMSL's Mark Twain Building.
The Cougars also are expecting an intense battle in Saturday's game against the Missouri S&T.
The Miners outdueled the Cougars 67-60 at the Vadalabene Center. SIUE shot 36.5 percent for the game against Missouri S&T as Shelton led all scorers with 20 points.
"They gave us everything we could have wanted that game. We are now going to their place and can only expect them to be tougher with their crowd," said Hedberg.
SIUE leads the all-time series with Missouri S&T 15-8. Saturday's tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Gale Bullman Multi-purpose building.
