February 7, 2008 Lewis Tops Cougars 80-71 ROMEOVILLE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's Amber Shelton became the 18th 1,000-point scorer in school history Thursday with 31 points, but Lewis pushed it aside and defeated the Cougars 80-71. SIUE fell to 14-6 overall and 7-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Lewis jumped above the .500 mark with a 10-9 record overall and a 6-6 mark in the GLVC. The Lewis bench proved to be the difference, holding a 31-6 edge over SIUE. Jenna Mooberry powered the Flyers with 17 points off the bench. Three Lewis starters finished in double figures led by Kelly Dianis' 15 points. SIUE's Elyse Morris scored double figures for the fifth straight game, shooting an impressive 7 of 9 from the field for 14 points. Whitney Sykes also added 14 points and seven rebounds. Shelton's 31 points was a solid combination of shots from the field and the free throw line. The senior forward hit 10 of 20 shots from the field and 11 of 13 in free throws. She also led all players with nine rebounds. SIUE now heads to UW-Parkside for a 1 p.m. game Saturday in Kenosha, Wis. -siue- |
