Women's Basketball Begins Five-Game Road Swing
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's basketball begins a five-game road trip this week with inter-division games at Lewis and UW-Parkside.
SIUE, 14-5 overall and 7-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, battle a pair of teams aiming for a spot in the league's postseason tournament. The Cougars start with Lewis Thursday at 5:30 p.m. The Flyers hold a 9-9 record and a 5-6 mark in GLVC play.
UW-Parkside is one game better than Lewis at 6-5 in the GLVC with an overall record of 12-7. The Cougars meet UWP at 1 p.m. Saturday in Kenosha, Wis.
With five consecutive road games, Hedberg is looking for consistency in all areas.
This past Saturday, Coach Wendy Hedberg inserted junior forward Jessie Stapleton (Chillicothe) into the lineup for the first time. Stapleton responded with a 14-point, 10-rebound effort against Missouri-St. Louis for her first career double-double.
Brittany Imig (Joshua, Texas) came off the bench Saturday for a season-high 13 points, and Hedberg noted that senior Elyse Morris (Prophetstown) has picked up her offense, scoring double digits in each of her last four games.
"Elyse has been solid for us defensively. She tends to draw the best offensive player from the other team a lot," said Hedberg. With her solid defense, the additional offense that has provided 13.8 points per game has been a welcome addition.
Amber Shelton (Edwardsville), the team's leading scorer, continues to lead the GLVC in scoring with 21.7 points per game. She needs just 24 more points to become SIUE's 18th player to record 1,000 points.
