Cougars Focus on Defense, Rebounding For S&T and UMSL
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- For the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville womens basketball team, defense and rebounding are key to being successful against Missouri S&T and Missouri-St. Louis this week.
SIUE, 13-4 overall and 6-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, defeated Kentucky Weslyan 77-73 and Southern Indiana 73-70 last week. Amber Shelton (Edwardsville) was the top scorer in both road victories.
With Missouri S&T coming to the Vadalabene Center, SIUE gets the opporutnity to play the GLVC's top rated defense at home. The Miners are giving up a league low 58.0 points per game.
As for how the Cougars are going to attack the Miners defense, SIUE coach Wendy Hedberg is going to take the "best offense is a good defense" approach.
"They have the best defense in the conference. If they are not going to let us score, then we definitely cannot let them score. Our defense and rebounding will be key," said Hedberg.
Tip off for Thursday's game is at 5:30.
With Missouri-St. Louis being only a short drive away from the campus of SIUE, the Cougars expect the Tritons and their fans to come to the Vadalabene Center ready go.
"Since it's only 45 minutes between the too campuses, we have a natural rivalry. We definitely expect them to show up ready to play tough against us," said Hedberg.
Game time for Saturday's matchup is scheduled for 1 pm.
