January 22, 2008 SIUE Prepares For Battle Against Kentucky Wesleyan, Southern Indiana EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's basketball team is preparing for battle against Kentucky Wesleyan College and the University of Southern Indiana. The Cougars, 11-4 overall and 4-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, picked up a 67-41 victory over Saint Joseph's Saturday. Amber Shelton (Edwardsville), who leads the GLVC in scoring with a 22.5 scoring average, led the Cougars with 18 points. Whitney Sykes (Pontoon Beach) chipped in 12 more points. SIUE head coach Wendy Hedberg said she does not expect this week's road trip to be a walk in the park. "This is the GLVC, and you have to be ready to battle every game. The current records of Kentucky Wesleyan and Southern Indiana do not indicate how difficult these two teams are, especially at home. It will be competitive," said Hedberg. Both KWC and USI head into the week at 7-8 overall. Up first for the Cougars is Kentucky Wesleyan. SIUE leads the all-time series 31-8. Last year Kentucky Wesleyan defeated the Cougars 95-78 at the Vadalabene Center. In that game, Shelton led the Cougars with 23 points while Elyse Morris added 19. "Kentucky Wesleyan is a tough place to play and get a win. Every game, win or lose, is always close between us. It should be fun," said Hedberg. Tip off for Thursday's game in Owensboro, Ky. is at 5:15 p.m. SIUE then heads to Evansville, Ind., to take on Southern Indiana at 1 p.m. Saturday. Last year the Cougars needed two overtimes to defeat the Screaming Eagles 81-75 in Evansville. Shelton and Whitney Sykes combined for 52 of the Cougars' 81 points in that game. Southern Indiana leads the all-time series 25-23. "It's going to be competitive for 40 minutes, and we have to be ready to get after it," said Hedberg. -siue- |
