January 14, 2008 Indianapolis, Saint Joseph's Next for Cougars EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- After splitting a pair of games on its road trip this past weekend, the Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville women's basketball team will shift its focus to Indianapolis and Saint Joseph's. The Cougars easily defeated Rockhurst 70-41 on Thursday night and then two days later suffered a heartbreaking loss at Drury. With seven seconds left in the game, SIUE led by three points. Drury's Molly Carter was fouled after she made a three-pointer to tie the game at 68-68. Carter made her free throw with two ticks left on the clock to give Drury the 69-68 victory over the Cougars. The matchups don't get any easier for the Cougars this week. Indianapolis leads the GLVC East Division with a 12-1 record overall and a 5-1 mark in the GLVC. SIUE and Indianapolis boast the top two scorers in the GLVC overall as well as four of the top 15 scorers in the 14-team league. SIUE will send out GLVC-leading scorer Amber Shelton (Edwardsville) at 22.3 points per game and Whitney Sykes (Pontoon Beach) at 14.2 points per game. Indianapolis counters with scorers Karla Mast (21.2) and Jessica Canary (12.6). "Defensively, we will have to try and keep Mast and Canary under control and get someone else from their team to beat us," said SIUE coach Wendy Hedberg. Tip-off time for the Indianapolis game is 5:30 pm at the Vadalabene Center. Coach Hedberg also is not letting Saturday's matchup against a Saint Joseph's team that is winless in the conference and has only one victory on the season change her preparation level. "This is the GLVC. You have to be prepared every night no matter who you are playing. Saint Joseph's is struggling right now, but they are definitely capable of defeating us," said Hedberg. Start time for Saturday's game is 1 p.m. at the Vadalabene Center. -siue- |
