January 5, 2008 Sykes' 32 Powers Cougars EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Whitney Sykes scored a career-best 32 points Saturday as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville defeated Quincy 79-77 in women's Great Lakes Valley Conference basketball action at the Vadalabene Center. SIUE, now 9-2 overall and 2-1 in the GLVC, have now won five straight games. Quincy put up a fight in a back-and-forth game that featured 16 lead changes and 14 times when the score was tied. Sykes provided much of the offense as she hit 11 of 19 shots from the field, including five three-pointers. Laura Witherspoon added a career high 13 points for the Cougars, including a free throw with 12.6 seconds to put SIUE ahead by the final two-point margin. Amber Shelton added 19 points for SIUE. Jessie Stapleton grabbed the team-high in rebounds with eight. Quincy finished with four players in double figures. Jessica Keller was the team's leading scorer with 16 points followed by 15 from Whintae Irby and 12 each from Lindsey Stellflue and Megan Gavlick. SIUE now heads to the road for a Thursday contest at Rockhurst. Game time is 5:30 p.m. in Kansas City, Mo. -siue- |
