INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Saint Joseph’s College men and Bellarmine University women are picked to win the Great Lakes Valley Conference basketball east division for the 2005-06 season, while University of Southern Indiana men and Drury University women are predicted to win the title in the west. The pre-season poll is voted on by the league’s coaches in their respective divisions. They are not allowed to vote for their own team.

Saint Joseph’s (11-9, 17-12) totaled 36 points to claim first place in the men’s east division running away with six first place votes. Northern Kentucky (8-12, 14-15) earned one first place vote, landing them in second place with 26 points. Kentucky Wesleyan (9-11, 15-12) followed close behind with 25 points.

Bellarmine University (14-6, 21-9) women nudged into first place in the east tallying five first place votes and earning 35 points. Lewis University (15-5, 19-11) totaled 32 points with two first place votes. Northern Kentucky (13-7, 16-12) placed third with 25 points.

In the men’s west division, University of Southern Indiana (18-2, 27-5) received four first place votes and 34 total points to earn the first place spot. SIU Edwardsville (15-5, 23-9) came in a close second with 30 points and one first place vote. Quincy (14-6, 18-11) ranked third with one first place vote and 26 points.

GLVC newcomer Drury University (12-0, 29-2 in the Heartland Conference) is predicted to win the title in the women’s west division. They earned six first place votes to total 36 points. Drury University senior Amanda Newton was named the Women’s Division II Bulletin Preseason Player of the Year and the publication also picked Drury as the No. 1 team in the nation. Quincy (16-4, 24-9) tabbed one first place vote and totaled 30 points to claim second place while University of Southern Indiana (7-13, 14-14) ranked third with 26 points.
