SIUE Signs Three Volleyball Players For 2007
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Fresh off an appearance in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Championship match, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville volleyball team began the process of reloading the roster for the 2007 season.
SIUE Coach Todd Gober, whose 2006 team finished the season ranked No. 14 nationally with a 29-6 record, announced that Sydney Winslow (Park Hills, Mo.), Christy Long (Carbondale) and Antonette Palumbo (Rochester) have signed National Letters of Intent to play for the Cougars.
SIUE will get an extra bonus from Winslow as she also will be a member of the SIUE women's track and field team. Winslow, a 6-foot-1-inch outside hitter, is a two-time state high jump champion, posting a 5-foot-8-inch jump previously.
"She is a physical, power player who will compete for playing time immediately," said Gober.
SIUE track and field coach David Astrauskas shared the same enthusiasm for Winslow's signing.
"Sydney is an outstanding volleyball player and high jumper, and she will compete in both sports while at SIUE. Volleyball and the high jump compliment each other, and I think she will experience success in both sports," said Astrauskas.
Long, The Southern Player of the Year, led Carbondale to a school-record 33 victories this season. The 6-foot outside hitter recorded 384 kills and 56 blocks for the Terriers her senior season.
"She hits the ball hard and can play in the back row for us," said Gober. "Christy has all of the physical tools to be an outstanding college volleyball player."
Palumbo led Rochester High School to its first-ever appearance at the Illinois High School Association state tournament. Rochester finished with a 29-9 record after its match in the state quarterfinals. With 338 kills and 141 blocks, the 6-2 middle hitter has a "tremendous upside" awaiting her in college, noted Gober.
"She is the type of player who makes those around her better," said Gober.
