SIUE Volleyball Continues Homestand
"It's just nice to be home," said Southern Illinois University Edwardsville volleyball coach Todd Gober.
His enthusiasm for the home court at the Vadalabene Center isn't surprising. Out of the first 21 matches, only five have been at home. Over the past five seasons, SIUE is 43-5 on its home court.
Ranked No. 17 nationally in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll, SIUE holds a 16-5 record this season. All five of its losses have come from other teams ranked in the top 25.
"One thing we've noticed this season is that everybody brings their 'A' game when they play us," said Gober.
The leader in the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division, SIUE faces its final two teams from the East Division this weekend. The Cougars play Bellarmine Friday at 7 p.m. and Kentucky Wesleyan Saturday at 3 p.m.
SIUE's Mallory Clements (Mt. Pulaski) was named the Baden/GLVC Player of the Week a second time this past week after posting triple-doubles in wins over UW-Parkside and Lewis.
Clements is averaging 11.32 assists, 2.22 kills and 3.65 digs per game. The junior setter also leads the team in service aces with 25. What Clements really has accomplished is spreading the ball out among several different players.
"It's difficult for a team to key in on one player," said Gober. "I like the balance on our team."
That balance includes six players averaging two or more kills per game. Led by Kelsey Hubert's (Freeburg) 3.15 per game, she is followed by Samantha Schulte (Kenosha, Wis.) at 3.09, Emily Rahn (Waukesha, Wis.) at 2.88, Kate Hofeldt (Antioch) at 2.28, Clements at 2.22, and freshman Sydney Winslow (Farmington, Mo.) at 2.04.
