May 11, 2008 EDWARDSVILLE, Ill., - Defending national champion Southern Illinois University Edwardsville ended its 2008 run Sunday with a 1-0 loss in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Final at Cougar Field. SIUE ended the season with a 49-11 record. Ferris State, 34-16, advances to the Division II Spring Sports Festival in Houston, Texas, where the eight regional winners meet for a double-elimination tournament. In the first game, SIUE finished the job it started Saturday. The Cougars and Wayne State were unable to finish because of heavy rains and lightning. With SIUE leading 5-3 in the fifth inning, the two teams picked up where they left off. In the sixth inning, pinch runner Carly Wildenradt (Delavan) scored off of an error for Wayne State third baseman Robyn Haig. The Wildenradt run would be the last offense in the game. The Cougars were able to hold off the Warriors to win the game 6-3. Kaitlin Colosimo (Orland Park) recorded her 30th victory of the season for the Cougars. In the regional title game, Ferris State wasted no time getting on the board. In the first inning, Katie Kraai hit a sacrifice fly to right fielder Chaleen Rumpf (New Lenox) that scored Sarah Mueller. After FSU's first inning run SIUE was unable to generate any offense to support pitcher Kaitlin Colosimo. She pitched the entire game and receive credit for the loss, ending her season with a record of 30-7. Ferris State pitcher Holly Bruntjens, who was named the Most Outstanding Athlete for the tournament, tossed a four-hit shutout for the Bulldogs. Ferris State did not allow a single run in its four games and won three games 1-0. Kaeleigh Rousey (Bloomington), Lindsay Longfellow (Washington), Courtney Mall (Tucson, Ariz.), and Colosimo were all selected to the Great Lakes Region All-Tournament team.
