SIUE Softball Signs Junior College Standout
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Defending national champion Southern Illinois University Edwardsville softball has signed pitcher Katelyn Watkinson (Kalona, Iowa) to a national letter of intent to play for the Cougars next season.
SIUE Coach Sandy Montgomery announced the addition of the pitcher, who has been a standout for Muscatine (Iowa) Community College.
"Katie will be an outstanding addition to our pitching staff and will complement our other pitchers extremely well," said Montgomery.
Watkinson will join a pitching staff that is a combined 41-9 so far this season as the Cougars head into its final Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament. SIUE is in transition to NCAA Division I play and will feature a full Division I schedule for the 2009 season.
"She has a great command of pitches and a great off-speed pitch," said Montgomery. Watkinson will have two years of eligibility with the Cougars.
A first team All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association last season at Muscatine, Watkinson has collected 26 wins this season with a 1.09 earned run average and 192 strikeouts. She is ranked No. 2 in the nation in earned run average among National Junior College Athletic Association Division I teams. Muscatine is 47-5 so far this season.
Watkinson was a three-sport standout at Mid-Prairie High School in Wellman, Iowa. She played five seasons of softball, three seasons of volleyball, and three seasons of track and field. She earned All-State honors twice in softball and a multiple state qualifier in track and field.
