April 28, 2005 SIUE Softball Signs NJCAA All-American Pitcher EDWARDSVILLE - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville has signed pitcher Sabra McCune (DuQuoin) to a national letter of intent to play softball next season for the Cougars. McCune will have two years of eligibility as a Cougar. She was named a first team All-American in 2004 as a freshman for Wabash Valley College, a Division I member of the National Junior College Athletic Association. “She will certainly be an impact player for us,” said SIUE Coach Sandy Montgomery. McCune currently holds a 20-1 record this season as a sophomore with a 0.70 earned run average and 190 strikeouts. Wabash Valley, ranked fifth in the nation among NJCAA Division I teams, is looking for its sixth consecutive NJCAA Region XXIV title. Last season, McCune helped Warriors to a sixth-place finish at the NJCAA Championships. McCune finished the season with a 23-2 record. The Cougars hope McCune can step in and bolster an SIUE pitching staff which holds a 37-9 record and a 13-1 mark in the Great Lakes Valley Conference this season. “She definitely will strengthen our pitching staff,” said Montgomery. -siue- |
