This class is an elective course that is highly recommended for freshman athletes and is designed to assist students achieve their academic goals. Students learn about the University, its resources, and skills and techniques to help them succeed in college. You will need a folder with pockets to keep notes and handouts from the class. You will be required to attend two cultural events such as the SIUE Arts and Issues series, an SIUE musical event, or a theater and dance production. You will write a short paper on one of the events. Please notify your instructor(s) if you are a student with a disability and need an accommodation.

Grading
Attendance: (10% of grade) Attendance and class participation are expected. You will receive one-half point for each class that you attend and fully participate. You are expected to attend the Student Athlete Welcome Back Picnic and you are required to attend a special program presented by Mark Sterner on DUIs on Sunday, September 21st. In addition, other homework will be assigned. Failure to turn in these assignments will result in 2 points deducted per each assignment.

Quizzes: Each quiz is worth 20 points (40% of grade). Questions will come from lectures, speakers, and textbook readings.
    Quiz #1 - October 1
    Quiz #2 - November 12

Oral Presentation: (5% of grade) You will give an oral presentation on an approved article from "Off to College." Weeks 15 and 16.
Papers: (25% of grade)

  1. Reaction Paper (20% of grade) You will write a reaction paper to the book "The Dying Ground." Details will be discussed in class. Three typewritten pages. Due Wednesday, November 19.
  2. Cultural Event Paper (5% of grade) You will write a short paper on a cultural event you attended. The paper should include the name and place of the event, the date, a description of the event, why you chose it and what it meant to you. Due Wednesday, December 10.
Final Exam: (20% of grade) Thursday, December 18, 10:00 a.m. - 11:40 a.m.
