BEHAVIORAL GUIDELINES FOR STUDENT-ATHLETES
The following regulations/guidelines apply to all student-athletes. It
shall be the head coach's responsibility to establish and enforce
additional team regulations for his/her particular sport. These should be
presented in document form during the recruitment process or prior to the
first squad meeting. Compliance with established team and training rules
is expected.
1. Athletics financial aid may be reduced or gradated during the
period of the award
if the student-athlete:
a. renders himself/herself ineligible for intercollegiate
competition
b. engages in serious misconduct warranting substantial disciplinary
penalty
c. Voluntarily withdraws from a sport for personal reasons
2. Student-athletes are responsible for arranging their class
schedules or work schedules at times which do not interfere with practice
schedules. In some instances class conflicts are unavoidable; these
should be discussed with your head coach prior to enrollment so that the
matter can be resolved.
3. Student-athletes are expected to attend all of their classes.
Missing class except for scheduled games will not be tolerated. Missing
class to attend practice is a violation of NCAA regulations.
4. Possession and/or use of a controlled substance may be deemed
sufficient cause for immediate dismissal from any team, and for possible
disciplinary action by higher authorities.
5. Regardless of age, the purchase and/or consumption of alcoholic
beverages by student-athletes or student employees on any road trip, or
while representing the University, is strictly forbidden and will result
in disciplinary action which may include suspension or dismissal from the
team.
6. No player or game personnel may use any form of tobacco product
during athletic practices or games.
7. Participation in any gambling activity that involves
intercollegiate athletics or professional athletics, through a bookmaker,
a parlay card, or any other method employed by organized gambling, is a
violation of NCAA regulations.
8. Student-athletes shall not compete with more than one team at
SIUE, nor practice with more than one team, without the consent of both
(or all) coaches. Coaches must agree upon the student-athlete's priorities where
a conflict may exist.
9. Student-athletes with eligibility remaining shall not compete as a
member of an outside amateur team during the team season.
10. All team members are expected to display acceptable behavior on
and off the playing field. Fighting, verbal abuse, taunting, foul language, and hazing
activities are unacceptable behaviors. Hazing is when a student knowingly requires performance of any act by a student for the purpose of induction or admission into any group, team, organization or society associated or connected with the University. This includes any pastime or amusement engaged in by students whereby such pastime or amusement is conducted for the purpose of holding up any student to ridicule and/or any act which poses a hazard to the health and safety of the student or damage to property. This regulation would not preclude team bonding/initiation activities which are approved by the head coach and conducted in the presence of the head coach.
11. Attendance at training sessions must take precedence over
attendance at non-athletic extracurricular meetings and events.
Exceptions are at the discretion of the coach.
12. Cooperation and participation in game ceremonies, team and
athletics department-sponsored activities, and special University events
is expected of each student-athlete.
13. The student-athlete must participate in practice and games.
Illness, injury or special needs must be communicated to and approved by
the head coach.
14. Game uniforms, including warm-ups, jackets, etc., are to be worn
only at games or upon other occasions as specified by the coach.
15. The head coach has the ultimate responsibility for the
determination of playing positions and playing time for all players, and
for decisions regarding strategies to be employed during a contest.
16. The coach has the prerogative of specifying a reasonable time for
all members of the traveling party to be in their assigned rooms. At all
times, student-athletes should be respectful of their teammates and other
guests and travelers around them.
17. All athletics travel to events is by team. If an individual
believes there is a justifiable reason why individual travel is
necessary, he/she must communicate this with the head coach not later than
48 hours prior to departure time. If the head coach approves the
individual travel, the student-athlete must sign a Statement of Release.
18. Student-athletes should also understand the Student Code of Conduct at
SIUE. Violations of that code are subject to the University's disciplinary
processes which apply to all students. Severe violations can result in
loss of your athletic eligibility.
19. Violations of Behavorial Guidelines and/or the SIUE Student Code of Conduct may be considered sufficient
grounds for gradated or reduced athletic financial aid, non-renewal of
athletic financial aid, and disciplinary action up to and including
suspension or dismissal from the team.
