ATHLETIC AWARDS

STUDENT-ATHLETE AWARDS: LETTERMAN'S AWARD

Effective with the freshman/transfer class entering on or after fall term 1996, the following schedule of athletics awards has been recommended by the Student-Athlete Advisory Board (SAAB) and approved by the Director of Athletics.

1. Student-athletes must letter in two of his/her four years of eligibility in order to receive the letter jacket.

2. Student-athletes may receive only one letter jacket regardless of the number of sports participated in.

3. Non-letter winners will receive a certificate of participation.

4. Except for the year a jacket is received, letter winners will receive a certificate for lettering.

5. Four-year award: the four-year award is a wristwatch and is awarded to each student-athlete who is recommended by the head coach and who participates in all four years of eligibility at SIUE, whether or not he/she lettered during that period.

6.* During the phase-in process current student-athletes may elect to remain in the current award program, or may elect to participate in the letter program. However, they must commit to the program of their choice prior to participation in their third year of eligibility. That commitment remains in effect for their remaining eligibility.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR A LETTER AWARD

Each coach is responsible for submitting and explaining to his/her respective team at the orientation meeting held at the beginning of the season those criteria for lettering which have been established for that sport.

1. Any student-athlete not in good academic standing during the year which applies to the letter award shall not be eligible to receive a letter award.

2. Any student-athlete who quits a team during the year which applies to the award will not be eligible to receive a letter award.

3. Student-athletes must fulfill the practice, conditioning, attitude, and conduct requirements established by the department or head coach.

4. Special consideration may be given for a player who was injured or who has made a special contribution to the team. Appeals must be submitted in writing by the head coach and approved by the Director of Athletics.

5. The coach should submit all recommendations for letter awards within two weeks following the conclusion of the sport season to the Assistant Director of Athletics.

SPORTS LETTERING CRITERIA

Baseball:
Position Players: participate in at least 50% of all games played.
Pitchers: Must make six (6) appearances, or participate in 20 innings, or earn three (3) decisions.

Basketball (Men's and Women's):
Participate in at least 50% of all games played, or accumulate 120 minutes of playing time.

Cross Country (Men's and Women's):
A runner must be in the top five on the team, or in at least 75% of the scheduled meets

Soccer (Men's and Women's):
Field Players: shall participate in at least 50% of all games played.
Goalkeepers: shall participate in at least 30% of all games played.

Softball:
Position Players: participate in 50% of all games played.
Pitchers: participate in 25% of all games played.

Tennis (Men's and Women's):
Participate in 50% of all matches played, or qualify for the National Tournament.

Volleyball:
Participate in at least 50% of all matches played.

Wrestling:
Participate in at least 60% of all varsity matches, or qualify for the National Tournament.

Track & Field M& W (Indoor and Outdoor) An athlete must meet at least 4 of the 5 following criteria.

  1. Compete in 75% of the indoor meets
  2. Compete in 75% of the outdoor meets
  3. Place in top 6 in conference meet
  4. Score a minimum of 4 points in multiple events in a single conference meet
  5. Minimum of 2 unexcused absences from practice
Automatic Qualifications
  1. National qualifying performance
  2. School record individual performance

Women's Golf
1. Compete in 50% of all matches
2. Finish in the top 25 in at least one in season tournament competition
3. Minimum of 2 unexcused absences from practice
4. Completion of off season conditioning program

Automatic Qualification:

1. Qualify for National Tournament (Individual or Team)
2. Set a School Record
3. Participating member of the team for a minimum of 2 years

Men's Golf
1. Compete in 50% of varsity matches throughout the year
2. Receive all-conference or all region honors

The following special awards are presented annually:

MOST VALUABLE PLAYER AWARD (each varsity sport)

Qualifications

1. Each team will first determine whether or not an MVP award shall be presented that year in the sport. This shall be done by secret ballot of the members of the team (players only). Majority shall rule. In the event of a tie vote, an MVP election shall be held.

2. If it is decided to select an MVP, the coach shall supply a list of players from the team who qualified for a letter award and their statistical accomplishments.

3. Each player on the team shall have one (1) vote.

4. Ballots will be used for voting.

5. The player receiving the most votes shall be declared the team's MVP.

6. In case of a tie, the final selection may be decided by the coach(es) whose vote(s) shall be counted among the ballots, or a co-MVP award may be made at the expense of the sport.

7. The coaches alone will view the ballots after they have been cast. Ballots should be held by the coach (for record) until the presentation has been made.

8. The MVP award will be selected by the assigned athletics personnel.

9. The MVP awards may be presented at the final team function (team dinner, picnic, etc.) for the year.


OUTSTANDING ATHLETE AWARDS AND SPORTSMANSHIP AWARDS (Male and Female)

Criteria for Nominations

1. A student-athlete can be nominated for both awards; however, these must be separate nominations presented prior to the start of the meeting. Student-athletes can be nominated by any head coach for any sport. Alterations to nominations may not be made after the meeting and voting has commenced. A student-athlete may only win one of these awards.

2. The only eligible voters will consist of the following staff of SIUE Athletics: the Director of Athletics, the Associate Director of Athletics, the Head Trainer and the Sports Information Director. This group only will consider written nominations which may be submitted in absentia.

3. The Outstanding Athlete Award will be voted upon first.

4. Upon occasion, when two highly talented individuals are deserving of an award, the voting group may petition to the athletics director for co-winners. It is also conceivable there may be years when there are no qualified individuals.

5. Award selections shall be completed by the beginning of June and will be formally introduced through an official news release in June. Award winners will be invited to attend an awards reception and ceremony at an athletics event in the fall term.

SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD (Male and Female) - criteria to be considered

Must be junior or senior

Athletic ability contributing to success of a team

Outstanding leader

Any player removed from a game by an official shall be ineligible for this award

Making progress toward a degree

Captain of a team

Active in student activities

Active in community activities

Maintains a good scholastic average

Contribution to team

Maintains good image, reflects student-athlete concept


ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

Academic All-Conference:
The conference shall name a GLVC Academic All-Conference Team in each sport consisting of all student-athletes who meet the following conditions: the student-athlete was a starter or important reserve, as determined by the team coach, and

a. the student-athlete is a freshman or first-year transfer who attained a GPA of 3.40 or higher during the fall semester, or

b. the student-athlete completed at least two semesters at the institution and has a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 or has attained a GPA of at least 3.40 in each of the preceding two semesters.

c. A certificate for each recipient will be provided to each institution to award as determined by the institution.

SCHOLAR-ATHLETE AWARDS (male and female)

Qualifications

1. Student-athlete shall be a senior (4th year of eligibility).

2. Student-athlete shall possess the highest grade point average of all eligible student-athletes.

3. Student-athlete will have accumulated at least 100 hours.

4. The Scholar-Athlete Award(s) shall be provided by the SIUE Alumni Association.

DEAN'S LIST:
Dean's List recognizes students who demonstrate outstanding scholarship. To qualify for Dean's List, a student must have at least 12 hours of course work with a minimum GPA of 3.50 for the term. These hours can not include Adademic Development work or credit received for out-of-class proficiencies.

CHI ALPHA SIGMA:
The National College Athlete Honor Society is an honorary college athletic society for the recognition of high academic achievers and sport letter winners at the college level. Each student-athlete must be a junior or senior in collegiate standing. Each must have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.4, and each must have earned a letter in a varsity intercollegiate sport. From standards established by the state council, each student-athlete has to show character and citizenship. He or She must have endorsement from the head coach, and are recommended by the college or university's Chapter President. Each student-athlete will receive a certificate of induction to the chapter.

COUGAR CADRE AWARD:
This award was developed by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee to exemplify the student-athlete concept. The nominees from each team must have the minimum requirements of a 3.00 overall GPA, and must have earned a varsity letter at least once. First year transfers and freshmen are not eligible to be nominated. Each team selects one reprsentative from their team who not only demonstrates academic and athletic success but promotes teamwork, perserverance, and self-discipline. The teams also take into account leadership, sportsmanship, and campus or community involvement. Two final Cougar Cadre Captains are selected from the individual team nominees.

CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP AWARDS:

Members of a conference championship team in the GLVC will receive a plaque sponsored by the Athletics Department at the fall awards reception.

NCAA CHAMPIONS:

Members of an NCAA championship team, or individual NCAA champions, will be recognized by awarding of a ring. Only one (1) ring will be awarded during the career of the student-athlete.

Award selections shall be completed by the end of May and may be formally introduced through an official news release. Award winners will be invited to attend an awards reception and ceremony at an athletics event conducted during the next fall term.

Each team will be permitted to have a separate awards banquet at the conclusion of the season or at another time which the head coach selects with the approval of the Athletics Director.

"Outsiders" may be invited to the team banquet, but they must pay to attend. Parents, relatives of the athletes, and athletes, shall also be charged.

In lieu of banquets, it shall be permissible for the head coach to plan a "party" at the coach's home or at a public dining establishment as long as the cost of said "party" or banquet is comparable to a regularly scheduled event on the college campus. Student-athletes may be charged some or all of the cost. Be sure that NCAA rules are followed regarding dinners, parties. No awards or gifts may be given student-athletes without prior approval of the athletics director.
