ACADEMIC ADVISEMENT

Advisement is mandatory for all students prior to registration each term. Student-athletes who have not yet been accepted into a major are advised and registered by Jaci DeClue, Academic Advisor for Athletics in the Vadalabene Center, Room 1002. Jaci can provide you with information about your intended major course of study and/or refer you to the appropriate office for further information. Student-athletes with declared majors are advised in the appropriate departments.

ACADEMIC MONITORING

Student-athletes new to the University, as well as students having academic difficulty may also be required to attend regularly scheduled academic monitoring sessions with the Academic Advisor for Athletics. Student-athletes who fall into this category will be notified by their coaches and instructed to make an appointment to meet with Jaci promptly.
All student-athletes on Academic Probation (less than a 2.0 cumulative GPA) must meet with the Academic Advisor for Athletics to sign an academic contract and to set up bi-weekly monitoring sessions at the start of the semester in order to practice with his/her team.

REGISTRATION FOR SEMESTER COURSES

Since registration for subsequent semesters occurs early in the semester, it is important to make an appointment with either your departmental academic advisor (if you have declared your major), or the Academic Advisor for Athletics (for undeclared students) in the first few weeks of the semester. An appointment is necessary for all registration sessions.

SCHEDULE CHANGES

Do NOT make schedule changes (Drop or Add) without informing your head coach and the Academic Advisor for Athletics.

All schedule changes require that a PROGRAM CHANGE form be completed and submitted to the Enrollment Center before the deadline for the type of transaction you are making. See the Schedule of Classes for specific calendar dates.

The University's regulations for adding and dropping classes are summarized below.

ADDING CLASSES
During week one of the term, you may add any open or closed class with an "Add/Drop" slip that has been first signed by your advisor, and then by the instructor of the course.

Adding a class during week two of the term requires the signature of advisor, instructor, and department chairperson.

After week two only classes which start after that time (workshops, independent study courses, etc.) may be added. The Dean's signature is required in addition to those of instructor, advisor, and department chairperson.

DROPPING CLASSES

CAUTION! Dropping a class without discussing it with your coach and the Academic Advisor for Athletics may put your current or future athletic eligibility in jeopardy. Student-athletes must discuss dropping a course with both parties prior to taking action.

During weeks 1 - 2 students may drop classes without permission of the instructor and have no entry on the transcript. Classes dropped during this period may qualify you for a refund. Students must always fill out an "add/drop" slip to drop a course.

During weeks 3 - 10 students may drop classes without permission of the instructor. A grade of "W" is automatically assigned.

During weeks 11 - 13 students may drop classes after approval by the instructor and advisor. A grade of "WP" or "WF" must be assigned by the instructor; "WF" will be computed as an "F" in the GPA.

CHAMPS/Life Skills

At SIUE, we believe that the development of the whole student-athlete (athletically, academically, and personally) is crucial to the success of him/her upon graduation. The Cougar Life Skills program (a version of the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program) will enable student-athletes to take part in workshops, seminars, and community service projects that support the five CHAMPS commitment areas:

  • Academic Excellence
  • Athletic Excellence
  • Personal Development
  • Career Development
  • Community Service

Through the collaboration of SUIE's Kimmel Leadership Center, Career Development Center, Wellness Center, ROTC, Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and the Athletic Department, student-athletes can take part in programs covering topics like...
  • Alcohol and Drugs
  • Managing Stress
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Developing Self-Esteem
  • Career Development
  • Professional Etiquette
  • Motivating Others
  • Community Outreach
  • Nutrition/Healthy Eating

Student athletes must attend at least two champs life skill sponsored events by the end of each academic year. Not meeting this requirement will impact your eligibility to practice and compete with your team.
