Cougar Men Open Season with Principia Tournament
EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. - The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's tennis team opens its season Friday with the Principia Tournament.
For head coach Kyler Updyke, this weekend can be viewed as a Great Lakes Valley Conference warmup tournament.
"With the teams participating this weekend, we will face a competition level that is very close to what we will see in the GLVC. This will be a good warm-up for us," said Updyke
Figuring that the fast court surfaces might make things interesting this weekend, SIUE has been preparing for a weekend with fast match play.
"We have been working on a lot of match strategies because the courts this weekend are going to be fast," said Updyke.
With two returners and six newcomers Updyke has the challenge of melding these two groups of players into a team that will improve on last year's 11-12 overall and 2-3 GLVC record.
For the veterans, Cole Garrison (Edwardsville) and Mike Jolly (Jacksonville) return for their junior and senior season campaigns.
Garrison, who finished last year with a 7-8 singles record, will remain as the teams' No. 5 singles players. He will also team with Paulo Gonzales (Chicago) for the No. 1 doubles team.
Jolly, who finished last season with an 11-17 singles record, will play primarily as a member of a doubles team.
On the newcomer side, the Cougars welcome two juniors, a sophomore, and two freshmen.
Jordan Faulkenberg (Troy), a long and athletic player who is relatively new to the sport, is the No. 6 singles player for the Cougars.
Carlos Sanchez (Comitan, Chiapas, Mexico), a Lewis and Clark Community College transfer is the No. 2 singles player for the Cougars and one-half of the No. 2 doubles team.
Robert Young (Kirkland), a North Greenville University transfer and NCCAA All-American, will team with Carlos Sanchez to create the No. 2 double team.
Gonzalez, a prep standout at Pueri Domus high school in Chicago, has played his way into the No. 1 singles position and will team with Garrison to form the No. 1 doubles team.
Linden Graber (Swansea), another prep standout, will also look to secure court time for the Cougars this season.
The two-day Principia Tournament will begin Friday and will be played on the Hexberg Courts in Elsah, Ill.
