Doubles Play Boosts Cougars
EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. -- The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's tennis team started its outdoor season with their spring break trip in Orlando, Fla.
The Cougars finished their five-match trip with a 3-2 record.
"We matched up well with most of the teams there," said SIUE men's associate tennis coach Kyler Updyke.
Zach Allison (Edwardsville) led the Cougars with an undefeated singles record.
The doubles play of Mike Jolly (Jacksonville) and Nicolas Garrison (Edwardsville) was strong for SIUE.
Jolly and Garrison finished the week with a 3-2 record in doubles play.
Doug Kim (Granite City) and Eduardo DeLaCruz (Addison) also played well in doubles competition.
Kim and DeLaCruz finished with a doubles record of 4-1.
"Our doubles play is what kept us in the close matches and what put us over the top in matches," said Updyke.
SIUE will continue its outdoor season against Bellarmine and Northern Kentucky this week. Both of the matches will be non-conference events. SIUE plays at Bellarmine Friday at 1 p.m. and at Northern Kentucky Saturday at 9 am.
