February 26, 2007 Cougars Head to Florida EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. -- The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's and women's tennis teams are prepared to start their outdoor season this weekend as they head into spring break. "We are officially back outside this week to get used to playing outdoors," said men's and women's tennis associate head coach Kyler Updyke. Updyke said that playing indoor is a lot faster than outdoor, but the players will still need to get used to the outdoor weather conditions. The men's and women's teams both will be playing six matches while in Orlando, Fla., for the trip. "We will be playing a wide range of teams including NAIA and NCAA Division I, II and III. All of them are from the north and east so they will have about the same amount of outdoor experience as we have had this year," said Updyke. The men's team is coming off of a big 5-4 win over Illinois-Springfield and is ready to head down to Florida. "I tried to put a little pressure on the team because they (Illinois-Springfield) beat us last year," said Updyke. The Cougars won two of the three doubles matches, which was a big key in the win. The women's team is currently focused on improving its doubles play. "We have a lot of young players on the women's team, and they don't have a lot of doubles experience. We are working on that," said Updyke. "Both of the squads have a lot of depth, and we pick up a lot of our points in the middle and bottom of the lineup," said Updyke. The men and women both have their first match next Monday at noon against Mt. Saint Mary's in Orlando, Fla. -siue cougars- |
