Belt To Take Reigns of SIUE Tennis Program
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Bryan Belt has been named the new head coach of the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's and women's tennis programs following the retirement of coach Bill Logan.
Logan announced his retirement from SIUE Athletics effective in September. SIUE won three Great Lakes Valley Conference championships under Logan, winning the women's championships in the 1995-96 season and the men's championships in both 1996-97 and 1997-98. Logan posted a record of 107-108 as the men's tennis coach for the past 12 seasons and an 87-48 mark as the women's coach for the past 10 seasons.
"We are very appreciative of Bill Logan's work and tenure," said SIUE Director of Athletics Brad Hewitt. "Bill has worked for both programs for the past decade mostly by himself. He has done an admirable job in that regard. He has always placed his athletes first."
Belt, a 1993 graduate of SIUE, will continue his role as the Assistant Director of Athletics, a title he has held since 1999. Belt previously has been an assistant coach with the Cougar softball program since 1993. His major responsibilities with softball was the evaluation and recruitment of high-quality student-athletes. The SIUE softball team has been to the NCAA Championships in each of the last six seasons.
"We are extremely excited that he is interested in taking on these additional duties," said Hewitt. "He will be aiming to place more emphasis on recruiting regional talent for both tennis programs."
A 1988 graduate of Edwardsville High School, where he was a four-year letterwinner with the Tigers, Belt becomes the sixth head coach in the history of the men's program and the fifth for the women's program. Hewitt said he expects to hire additional help for the women's and men's programs.
Belt was an office manager in 1994 for the St. Louis Ambush professional soccer team and its director of operations in 1995. He rejoined SIUE as a member of the Accounting Department in 1996 before joining Intercollegiate Athletics.
A native of Highland, Belt and his wife, Melanie, have three sons Bradford, 10; Chandler, 8; and Patrick, 6.
