Cougars Set For Crucial Week
The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men’s tennis team faces three opponents this week.
The Cougars take on Southern Indiana Tuesday, Quincy Friday, and Missouri-St. Louis Saturday. All three matches will be played at the Cougar Tennis Courts. The matches against the Screaming Eagles and Hawks begin at 3 p.m., and the match with the Rivermen starts at 9 a.m.
SIUE, 5-8 overall and 0-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division, needs to win of the two of the three contests to qualify for the GLVC Tournament on April 21-22. The GLVC tournament will be hosted by SIUE.
All three teams the Cougars are playing have a 0-2 mark in conference play.
The Cougars defeated Oakland City 9-0 over the weekend.
“It was nice to get back on the winning track and gets some confidence,” said SIUE men’s tennis coach Bryan Belt. “We know how important this week is, and it was important to get a win right before we play Southern Indiana Tuesday.”
Mike Jolly (Jacksonville) leads the team with a 6-3 record playing at No. 5 and 6 singles.
“Mike started the season not in the lineup,” said Belt. “He is playing really well and his whole game has improved as well.”
Eduardo DeLaCruz (Addison) and Cole Garrison (Edwardsville) have posted a 7-4 mark playing at No. 3 doubles.
