March 27, 2006 Men’s Tennis Opens GLVC Play SIUE men’s tennis coach Bryan Belt begins Great Lakes Valley Conference play in the league’s West Division. SIUE travels to Drury and Rockhurst for matches on Friday and Saturday. Belt said the team’s week off from play could have helped its nagging injuries. “All of us benefitted from the week off,” said Belt. Drury figures to be not only among the GLVC’s elite teams this season but also among the nation’s best. The Panthers are 10-0 and ranked No. 1 in the nation in the latest rankings. Rockhurst, meanwhile, is 2-0 with close wins over Benedictine and Southwest Baptist. Belt said his top players in the singles lineup have been inconsistent. He’s hoping to get everyone playing well for the upcoming road trip. “I’ll be looking for our No. 3 doubles of Eduardo DeLaCruz (Danville) and Nicolas Garrison (Edwardsville) to compete and improve. Eddie also has been outstanding at No. 5 singles,” said Belt. “Mike Jolly (Jacksonville) also has been a surprise, working his way into the No. 6 singles and No. 2 doubles,” Belt continued. -siue- |
