Cougars Face Principia
First-year coach Bryan Belt will have to settle for juggling his lineup in the early season because of injuries.
Belt said Matt Kuban (Pekin) and Justin Free (Danville) will be unavailable this week. Kuban will be out for the season. Free, an All-Great Lakes Valley Conference pick last season, is recovering from a shoulder injury and hopes to return to the lineup soon.
"When we're all healthy, I think we'll have a pretty good squad," said Belt.
SIUE started newcomer Doug Kim (Granite City), a transfer from McKendree, at the No. 1 spot in the 4-1 loss at Saint Louis. Tribaud Chevalier played (Corcoue Sur Logne, France) at No. 2 for SIUE and was a 7-5, 602 winner over SLU's Chris Welnetz.
"I thought we competed well (at SLU), especially for oyr first match. We were in most of the most matches, and I think we surprised SLU a little but," said Belt.
The Cougars will play a modified match against Principia on Tuesday with four singles matches and one double match on both the men's and women's side.
The SIUE men face off against Saint Francis on Saturday at 3 p.m.
