April 22, 2008 Courtesy of GLVC Sports Information GLVC Announces Men's Track & Field Athletes of the Week INDIANAPOLIS – Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s Scott Block (Hanover Park, Ill.) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week and Drury University’s Jaime Villa Zapatero (Moore, Okla.) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week. Block, a junior for the Cougars, notched a NCAA Division II automatic qualifying mark at the Vanderbilt Invitational over the weekend. He placed second in the shot put with a throw of 17.41 meters. Block’s throw set a new SIUE school record and is currently ranked first in the GLVC and fourth on the NCAA Division II National List. In addition to the superb effort in the shot put, Block also posted a NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark in the discus with a throw of 50.76 meters. His effort was good for first-place in the event. Block completed the meet with a sixth-place finish in the hammer throw with a mark of 55.23 meters. SIUE and Block, who also ranks first in the GLVC in the hammer throw and discus, will host the SIUE twilight on Saturday. Villa Zapatero, a freshman runner for the Panthers, posted a solid effort in windy and rainy conditions at the Kansas Relays over the weekend. He notched a personal-best and NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time in the 5,000 meters and won the event by finishing in 14:38.15. His effort was nearly two seconds better than the second-place finisher as he outkicked several runners in the final 60 seconds of his final lap. Other top performers in the GLVC last week included Bellarmine’s Zach Pittman, Lewis’ Dan Probst, SIU Edwardsville’s Jeremy Puckett and UIndy’s Seth Galloway and Elliott Cohee. -siue cougars- |
