April 1, 2008 Courtesy of GLVC Sports Information SIUE'S BLOCK, USI'S MANNIX NAMED MEN'S TRACK & FIELD ATHLETES OF THE WEEK INDIANAPOLIS - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's Scott Block (Hanover Park, Ill.) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week and the University of Southern Indiana's Tristan Mannix (Crothersville, Ind.) is the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week. Block, a junior thrower for the Cougars, posted an impressive effort in the field events at a pair of invitationals over the weekend and notched two NCAA Division II provisional marks and one automatic qualifying mark. He opened the weekend with a first-place finish in the 35-pound hammer throw at the Washington (Mo.) Invitational on Friday night. Block broke the SIUE school record and recorded a NCAA Division II provisional mark with a throw of 55.61 meters. At the SIU Carbondale Spring Classic on Saturday, Block won the discus throw with a NCAA Division II automatic qualifying mark of 52.14 meters. He also recorded a NCAA Division II provisional mark in the shot put with a throw of 16.74 meters. Block and the Cougars will return to action at the EIU Multis on Thursday and Friday. Mannix, a senior runner for the Eagles, just missed the NCAA Division II provisional time in the 5,000-meter run at the Washington (Mo.) Invitational on Friday. He placed second in the event with a time of 14:45.29. The current provisional time is 14:45.00. Mannix finished just behind UW-Platteville's Tyler Sigl who finished in a time of 14:26.97. Southern Indiana placed 11th as a team with a final score of 21 in the 14-team event. Other top performers in the GLVC last week included Drury's Steven Busch, Lewis' Randy Hinton, Missouri S&T's Heath Groom, Saint Joseph's Tadd Hettinger and UIndy's Craig Myers. -siue cougars- |
