SIUE Men's Track Captures GLVC Title
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville wrapped up its fourth consecutive Great Lakes Valley Conference men's outdoor track and field championship this past Saturday at Korte Stadium.
SIUE scored 266.5 points, outdistancing second-place Missouri-Rolla by 120 points. The Cougars won 12 of 21 events contested and scored many of its points by placing three and four competitors in the top eight in an event. The 266.5 points is the most-ever by a team at the GLVC Championships.
Kyle Rose (Kankakee) was named the Male Athlete of the Year for the meet. "He ran well in all of his events and really helped us in the relays," said SIUE Coach Dave Astrauskas, who was named the GLVC Coach of the Year.
Rose won the 200-meter and 400-meter races and finished second at 100 meters by .02 seconds.
Scott Block (Hanover Park) scored 26 points in the meet, including wins in the shot put and the discus. "Scott had three NCAA provisional marks," said Astrauskas.
Jonathan Bannister (Plano, Texas) ran a season-best 51.92 in the 400 hurdles, improving his position for the NCAA Championships, set for May 24-26 in Charlotte, N.C.
Other event winners included Kris Kombrink (O'Fallon) in the javelin, Blake Marcum (Centralia) at 1,500 meters, Anthony Weber (Marengo) in the pole vault, and Nicholas Schaecher (Kewanee) in the high jump.
Astrauskas has several Cougars still hoping to earn a spot at the national championships. His team will head to the Emporia State Qualifier Saturday.
