Cougars Gear Up For GLVC Championships
EDWARDSVILLE -- The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men’s and women’s track and field teams visit Rensselaer, Ind. for the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships this weekend.
“I’m looking forward to the conference meet this weekend,” said SIUE women’s track and field coach Ben Beyers. “This will be the last competition for many of our athletes this season. They’ve worked and sacrificed all year, and this is a chance to put the icing on the cake of a great season. Our goal is to try to win both the men’s and women’s titles just as we did last year.”
The Cougars are fresh off a good showing at the Drake Relays last weekend.
“I was happy with how we performed overall,” said Beyers. “The weather wasn’t the best, but that seems to be a Drake Relays tradition. Despite the bad weather, the athletes were able to come out and perform well.“
The men’s sprint medley team of Mike Horejs (Glendale Hts.), Brad Blevins (Gillespie), Jason Hall (Chicago), and Aaron Wilson (Chicago) set a new school record with a time of 3 minutes, 38.83 seconds.
The women’s 800-meter relay team foursome of Julie Scherer (Sumner), Valerie Simmons (St. Louis, Mo.), Angel Royston (Florissant, Mo.), and Tairisha Sawyer (Chicago) notched a new school record of 1:40.28.
The women’s 1,600-meter relay team of Kimetha Williams (Bellevue, Neb.), Sawyer, Royston, Deserea Brown (Flossmoor) broke the school record with a time of 3:44.69.
“We set three new school records,” said Beyers. Our women’s 4 x 400 time should be good enough to get into the NCAA Championships.”
The Cougars played host to the SIUE Twilight Saturday as Brian Taghon (East Moline) won the steeplechase in a time of 9:41.72.
