April 24, 2006 Weber Sets New Pole Vault Standard Anthony Weber (Marengo) set a new school record in the pole vault Saturday at the Illinois Invitational with a leap of 16 feet, 6.75 inches (5.05 meters). Weber, who won the pole vault event at Illinois, broke his own school record by two inches. “Anthony was determined to return to the outdoor national championships and this jump will definitely get him in,” said SIUE men’s track and field coach Dave Astrauskas. SIUE also posted provisional NCAA qualifying marks in the hammer throw and the discus. Steve Landers (Auburn) tossed the discus 168-9 (51.45 meters). “Steve had a big meet last weekend, and it was good to see him get a better throw in the discus,” said Astrauskas. “Hopefully, he is now in a groove and he continues to throw farther each weekend.” Kris Kombrink (O’Fallon), a freshman, threw the hammer 174-9 (53.26 meters). “Kris has had a tremendous freshman year. Currently, he is the only freshman in the country who has qualified for nationals in the hammer,” said Astrauskas. “Kris had a real good series of throws, which included a huge throw that was just outside of the sector. Kris is still learning the event and I am very excited about his future at SIUE. He possesses all the tools to be a great collegiate hammer thrower.” Kyle Rose (Kankakee) posted a NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the 400-meter dash. His time of 47.51 is SIUE’s best of the spring. “Kyle ran a good, smart race. He’s been so consistently good this year. He had a minor setback with an injury at indoor nationals, and we’ve been slowly bringing him back from that this outdoor season. But his time was good and may very well get him invited to the national meet once again,” said SIUE coach Ben Beyers. SIUE will travel to the Drake Relays Friday and Saturday as well as play host to Saturday’s Cougar Twilight. This will be an opportunity for SIUE’s top runners to post improved times against top-ranked Division II and Division III opponents. Jonathan Bannister (Plano, Texas), who won a hurdles event at the Drake Relays last year, already is scheduled in an individual event this season. The Cougars also are scheduled to compete in four different relay events. -siue cougars- |
