SIUE Men’s Track and Field
Signs Junior College All-American

EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville track and field has signed four-time junior college All-American Courtney Haywood to a national letter of intent.
A native of Blackjack, Mo., Haywood is currently finishing his second season at Rend Lake College. Haywood was a prep standout at Hazelwood East High School.
“Courtney is a big, strong, and athletic guy who will definitely be a big help in all of the throwing events for SIUE next season,” said SIUE men’s coach Dave Astrauskas.
Haywood was a second team All-American in the weight throw at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) meet in March. His best throw at the meet was 56 feet, 1.25 inches, a personal best.
As a freshman at Rend Lake, Haywood earned All-American honors in the weight throw and the shot put indoors as well as the discus outdoors.
Haywood’s discus throw of 169-6 in 2005 ranked him fourth nationally out of all U.S. Juniors (19 and under). He also has a personal best mark of 167-3 in the hammer.
“Courtney’s marks are impressive,” said Astrauskas. “He will be a force in the discus, the 35-pound weight throw and the hammer at the Division II level.
“I’m happy to have signed Courtney at SIUE, and I’m looking forward to coaching him and helping him reach his goals,” added Astrauskas.
