Cougars Claim GLVC Indoor Championship
The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men’s track and field team collected its second Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships in the last three years last weekend.
The Cougars scored 199.5 points and finished 33.5 points ahead of second place Missouri-Rolla.
“All of our athletes have worked hard all season,” said SIUE men’s track and field coach Dave Astrauskas. “It is nice to see it all pay off with the GLVC team title.”
Astrauskas was named GLVC Men’s Track and Field Coach of the Year.
Chris Littleton (Champaign) was named the GLVC Freshman of the Year. Littleton finished second in the 55-meter dash with a mark of 6.52. Littleton placed third in the 200 meters with a time of 22.53.
“Chris had a great meet,” said SIUE women’s track and field coach Ben Beyers. “He’s had a very solid beginning to his college career, and he definitely earned the Freshman of the Meet award.”
Senior Erik Steffens (Moline) won the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:32.65. Steffens placed second in the 3,000 meters with a mark of 8:48.94.
“Erik is really progressing into a confident runner,” said Beyers. “He brings so much to our team both on and off the track. I was very happy to see him win his first individual conference title.”
Kyle Rose (Kankakee) won the 400 meters in a time of 49.79, while finishing second in the 200 meters with a time of 22.20.
“Kyle continues to run great,” said Beyers. “Every race he runs he’s learning more about himself and how to really maximize his efforts.”
Ben Willard (Manito) placed first in the shot put with a toss of 51 feet, five inches (15.67 meters).
Anthony Weber (Marengo) won the pole vault with a mark of 16 feet, 0.5 inches (4.89 meters).
“We had a lot of very impressive individual performances this weekend,” said Astrauskas. “Since we were the favorites coming into this meet, I know we had a target on our back. Throughout the day of competition our athletes remained focused and continued to post solid performances.”
