Rose Finds Success at Indiana
Kyle Rose (Kankakee) set a new school record at 400 meters to lead the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's track and field team this past weekend.
"I know he had two big goals this weekend: break his school record and make the finals. He was able to accomplish both," said SIUE coach Ben Beyers. "Doing something like that in only the third meet of the season is a big breakthrough for him. Hopefully, he is able to stay focused and continues to work hard to achieve even some of his loftier goals for later this season."
Rose ran the banked track in Bloomington, Ind., in 48.23 seconds, breaking his old banked 200-meter record of 48.31 set last season.
SIUE competed at two events this past weekend. A handful of Cougars competed at the Hoosier Relays, while others were down the road at the Tiger Indoor Relays in Greencastle, Ind.
"The meet at Indiana had some of the best competition in the nation at any level, and it was a great experience for our athletes to be exposed to that," said Beyers. "I strongly believe that in order for our program to continue to evolve, we need to continue competing at meets like that. It only makes us stronger in the long run."
The Cougars posted several season-best marks over the weekend.
Mike Horejs (Glendale Heights) set a team-best in the 55-meter sprint with a time of 6.62. Aaron Cook (Moline) followed with a time of 8.08 in the 55-meter hurdles. Ryan Nowakowski (Rochester) set a school record in the 600-meter dash at 1:21.72. Blake Marcum (Centralia) ran the season's top mile in 4:20.82, while Erik Steffens (Moline) set a season-best at 5,000 meters in 15:09.03.
The Cougars' distance medley ran a school record 10:18.31. Ben Willard (Manito) posted a season-high throw of 48 feet, 5.25 inches, in the shot put.
SIUE returns to Greencastle, Ind., Saturday for the DePauw Invitational.
