May 27, 2005 Weeden Earns All-American Honors ABILENE, Texas — Southern Illinois University Edwardsville's Lee Weeden (Ferguson, Mo.) placed seventh in the shot put and secured himself All-American honors at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Weeden's second throw of the competition was 16.82 meters (55 feet, 2.25 inches). It was not the senior's best throw of the season but was good enough to score two team points for the Cougars. Weeden, who also earned All-American honors during the indoor season in the weight throw, had five throws better than 53 feet. SIUE's 1,600-meter relay team qualified for Saturday's finals with a third-place finish in its heat at 3:09.65. The time set a new school record. The Cougars' foursome of Kyle Rose (Kankakee), Chris Wright (Richton Park), Jonathan Bannister (Plano, Texas) and Jeff Fearday (Teutopolis) posted the fourth fastest time in the preliminaries, which included two heats. The top two teams in each heat and the next five fastest times advanced to the finals. Texas A&M-Kingsville ran the fastest preliminary time in 3:09.05. Saint Augustine's won the second heat and had the second fastest time at 3:09.10. The relay is the final men's event on the schedule, set to begin at 9:25 p.m. on Saturday. SIUE pole vaulter Anthony Weber had a short stay at the Championships. He joined seven other jumpers who missed on all three jumps at the opening height of 4.80 meters (15'9"). The SIUE men's track and field team have three events on Saturday. Phil Freimuth (Effingham) competes in the javelin at 3:30 p.m. Bannister has double duty with the 400-meter hurdles at 8:10 p.m. and the 1,600-meter relay later in the evening. -siue cougars-
