April 19, 2004 Track and Field Earns More Qualifying Spots Eight SIU Edwardsville track and field athletes have already provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Track and Field Championships, which will be held May 27-29 in Pomona, Calif. At last weekend’s Redbird Open, hosted by Illinois State, several individuals either lowered their qualifying times or hit qualifying marks. Jamie Thomas (Blue Island), who was already qualified in the 100-meter hurdles, earned provisional spots in the triple jump and the 400-meter hurdle list. Tairisha Sawyer, already qualified in the 200-meter dash, qualified in the 100-meter dash and now holds the school records in both events. “Thomas and Sawyer both had outstanding performances,” Coach Darryl Frerker said. Christen Carducci (Powell, Ohio) also is qualified in more than one event. Already on the 3,000 meter run qualifying list, she qualified for the 1,500-meter run last weekend. She joins Breanne Steffens (Moline) on the provisional qualifying list in the event. Carrie Carducci (Powell, Ohio) is qualified in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, and Callie Glover (Bartlett) is a qualifier in the shot put. On the men’s side, Brian Taghon (East Moline) ran a provisional qualifying time in the 1500-meter run. He joins Richard Skirball (Granite City), who has qualified for the 800-meter run, on the men’s provisional qualifying list. The Cougars have a busy week ahead, with nine athletes participating in the prestigious Drake Relays and the others competing in their own SIUE Twilight. Frerker is looking forward to hosting the SIUE Twilight and possibly getting more qualifiers. “The twilight meet has great competition across the board,” he said. “All different levels of schools will be represented, and it will be a great chance for individuals to qualify for nationals.” -siue cougars- |
