Cougars Claim GLVC Indoor Title
SIU Edwardsville's men's indoor track and field team captured its first ever Great Lakes Valley Conference indoor title on Saturday. The meet was held on the campus of Lewis University.
SIUE totaled 194 points, just edging Lewis University (188.50). Wisconsin-Parkside finished third with 128.50 points.
Eight Cougars finished in the top-two in their respective events to claim All-GLVC honors. Two relay squads also earned All-GLVC accolades.
Cody Ellermeyer's time of 1 minute, 54.28 seconds was good for the individual title in the 800-meter run. His time also broke the GLVC Championship record, which was set by teammate Richard Skirball in 2002. Ellermeyer also added his name to the provisional qualifying list in the event.
Although Skirball did not improve his provisional qualifying time in the 800-meter run, he made up for it by provisionally qualifying in the mile in a time of 4:12.10.
Brian Taghon was the GLVC Champion in the 5,000-meter run, clocking a time of 15:02.20.
Marvell Seals provisionally qualified in the triple jump with a jump of 47 feet, 9.25 inches. Lee Weeden posted a provisional qualifying distance of 52-1.75 in the shot put. Both Seals and Weeden were crowned conference champions in their respective events.
Brad Blevins won the 55-meter dash in a time of 6.55 seconds. Dustin Bilbruck was the conference champion in the long jump with a distance of 22 feet, 9.75 inches. Phil Freimuth claimed All-GLVC honors by jumping 1.99 meters in the high jump.
The Cougar distance medley team finished first in the meet, and the 4x200-meter relay team earned All-GLVC kudos.
SIUE head coach Darryl Frerker was honored as GLVC Coach of the Year. Frerker is the fifth coach at SIUE this season to be tabbed Coach of the Year.
