January 20, 2004 Skirball Hits National Qualifying Mark Richard Skirball (Granite City) continues to be a national contender for Southern Illinois University Edwardsville track and field. His latest quest for national prominence came Saturday when he broke into the national provisional qualifying list for the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships with a time of 1 minute, 54.25 seconds in the 800-meter run at the Saluki Booster Invitational. Skirball, a senior, has previously qualified for the NCAA Championships two times. He may have as many as five more chances to improve his time and standing on the national qualifying list. A time of nearly four seconds faster, depending on the size and shape of the indoor facility, could give Skirball an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships to be held in Boston on March 12-13. Coach Darryl Frerker said the men’s track team fared well in its 2004 debut. Lee Weeden (Ferguson, Mo.) was SIUE’s top performer in both the shot put and the 35-pound weight throw. Sophomore sprinter Brad Blevins (Gillespie) powered SIUE at 55 meters in a time of 6.72 second. SIUE’s next event is Saturday at the Eastern Illinois University Open in Charleston. Frerker said the meet figures to be larger than in year’s past since many of the teams who formerly competed in a meet in Indianapolis are now heading to Eastern Illinois. -siue cougars- |
