Reich Named Co-Freshman of the Year
Taylor Reich placed second in the decathlon and took third in the pole vault, earning Co-Freshman of the Year honors at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Track and Field Championships in Rensselaer, Ind.
As a team, SIUE placed third with 174.5 points behind upset winner Indianapolis (203.5) and Lewis (187).
SIUE won four events, including 1,500 meters with Richard Skirball posting a time of 4 minutes 0.71 seconds. George Murphy easily won the javelin with a throw of 56.60 meters.
Marvell Seals broke the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark in his victory in the triple jump. He leaped 14.85 meters, defeating his near opponent by nearly 1.5 meters.
The 4 x 400-meter relay team also won with a new GLVC record time of 3:17.52, breaking the old mark of 3:18.73 set by Lewis in 1999.
The top two in each event and the top relay team are named All-Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Cougars also had All-Conference performances from Dan Walden at 800 meters, Chad Burgess in the hammer throw and Reich in the decathlon.
