Three Named Daktronics All-Americans
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's soccer players Zach Bauer (St. Charles, Mo.), Greg Crook (Columbia), and Randy Roy (St. Louis, Mo.) have been selected as All-Americans by Daktronics.
The trio of players helped the Cougars to a 11-4-3 record, including a No. 20 Division II NSCAA/adidas national ranking. Bauer was name to the third team while Crook and Roy were selected to the honorable mention team.
"These guys were a big reason why we were one of the best defensive teams in the nation. Their talent and commitment drove much of our success this year," said SIUE coach Ed Huneke.
Bauer, a junior back, was selected for the Daktronics Division II All-American third team. During the season, he was a leader on the Cougar defense that posted a 0.58 goals against average. For his efforts, Bauer was also selected to the All-GLVC and All-Great Lakes Region teams. He was a first team selection for both lists.
"Bauer has a great read on the game and was able to cover up any mistakes that we made," said Huneke.
Crook, a senior goalkeeper, was selected for the Daktronics Division II All-American honorable mention team. On the season, Crook posted eight shutouts and allowed only 11 goals through 18 regular season games. He finished fourth nationally in goals against average at 0.55.
"He was an excellent athlete in goal for us this year, and he did a great job of keeping everything in front of him organized," said Huneke.
For Huneke, there is no doubt who made the Cougars go this year. "Roy was the motor of this team. His toughness and hard work really made a difference for us this season."
Roy, a sophomore midfielder, was selected for the Daktronics Division II All-American honorable mention team. In addition to his All-American honors, Roy collected first team honors for both the All-Great Lakes Region and All-GLVC teams. He posted two goals, including the game-winner against Missouri-St. Louis.
