Season Ends With 1-0 Loss
HIGHLAND HTS., Ky. - The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's soccer season came to a close Sunday with a 1-0 loss in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional final.
It was the fourth consecutive appearance for the Cougars in the Regional final. Sunday's game almost marked the end of an era in Cougar soccer. It was known as "Ed's Era" in 1986 when Coach Ed Huneke was named the the head coach of the Cougars when he took the position after the passing of Hall of Fame Coach Bob Guelker.
Huneke, who finished with a career coaching record of 251-156-34, announced in the preseason that would would step down at the conclusion of his 22nd season. Assistant Coach Kevin Kalish will become the third head coach in school history next season.
On Sunday, it was a bittersweet ending for Huneke and the Cougars, 11-4-3. SIUE outshot Northern Kentucky 12-11 but couldn't find the back of the net.
Northern Kentucky scored the only goal of the game at 40:12 when Chris Thompson connected off a throw-in and a pass from Braden Bishop and Tony Ray.
The game was postponed due to heavy rains and thunderstorms less than five minutes later, just before the end of the first half.
When play resumed, SIUE's best opportunity came in the 63rd minute when a shot by Ross Beveridge was saved by NKU defender Eric Ashworth as NKU goalkeeper Michael Lavric was momentarily out of position. Along with Ashworth's save, NKU, now 22-1, picked up four saves from Lavric
SIUE goalkeeper Greg Crook, who was named the Most Outstanding Defensive Player of the Great Lakes Regional Tournament, finished with seven saves. Zach Bauer, Kevin Bielicki and Dustin Attarian also were named to the All-Tournament team.
NKU now moves on to face Lincoln Memorial in the national quarterfinals.
