October 9, 2007 SIUE Men's Soccer Faces Traditional Rivals While Truman State isn't part of the Great Lakes Valley Conference, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville coach Ed Huneke still considers the Bulldogs an important test for the season. The non-conference battle set for Friday at 7 p.m. is a key matchup for the Cougars, which enters the game with an 8-2-1 record. SIUE is ranked second in the Great Lakes Region and 15th nationally, according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. "We tend to look at the people ahead of us. We need to spend more time looking at the people on our heels," said Huneke. After the game with Truman State, SIUE moves back into GLVC play Sunday with a 3:30 p.m. contest against Quincy. With two traditional rivals, SIUE will look to extend its three-game winning streak. Matt Harris (St. Charles, Mo.) provided the game-winning goal in the last win, a 2-1 triumph over Missouri-Rolla. Huneke said he likes to think SIUE's depth is strong. "It's nice when they prove it." SIUE's defense, led by goalkeeper Greg Crook (Columbia), has allowed seven goals in 11 games. Crook holds a 0.55 goals against average. Huneke said his team will focus on minimizing mistakes in its defending third of the field where opponents can take advantage of restarts and corner kicks to exploit SIUE's defense. -siue cougars- |
