Tough Stretch Continues for SIUE Men's Soccer
The 2007 schedule isn't going to get any easier, according to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's soccer coach Ed Huneke.
The No. 24-ranked Cougars, 3-1-1 overall and 3-0-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play, are coming off a 1-1 tie at No. 13 Rockhurst. Now SIUE returns home for two matches against UW-Parkside and Lewis on Friday and Sunday.
"We're right in the middle of a tough stretch," said Huneke. "It will groom us for the tough stretches down the road."
Both UW-Parkside and Lewis enter the weekend with 6-2 records overall with a 2-2 mark in league play.
"We have a history of close games with those teams," said Huneke. "We've had the edge, but it's a new year."
SIUE's Dustin Attarian (St. Louis) scored twice in the win at Drury while Kevin Bielicki (St. Louis) connected on the only goal against Rockhurst.
"Even though we're not getting a lot of goals, I like the way we are playing," added Huneke.
SIUE is a control-minded team that works on controlling the possession of the ball and then making an effective penetration from the middle third of the field to the attacking third.
Huneke said he was pleased with the play of Bob Ridder (Quincy) and Adam Lanter (Edwardsville). Ridder hit the post in overtime during the Rockhurst game. Lanter collected the assist Sunday, providing the perfect pass on Bielicki's goal.
Game time Friday for the UW-Parkside game is 7:30 p.m. Sunday's duel with Lewis is set for 2:30 p.m.
