Cougars Prepare for Road Trip
EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. -- Coming off of a two-win weekend, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's soccer team is now making preparations for its upcoming weekend matches at Drury and Rockhurst.
Both teams will pose an offensive challenge for the Cougars, a fact that has not slipped past SIUE coach Ed Huneke. SIUE enters the contests with a 2-1 record overall and a 2-0 mark in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
"We face two high-powered offenses this week. Both of them feature dangerous attackers who are racking up some impressive stats," said Huneke.
First up for Cougars is Drury, 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the GLVC. Having only given up three goals for the season, the Cougar defense will be tested with the Panthers. The Drury offense is averaging four goals and 17 shots on goal per game.
SIUE goalkeeper Greg Crook (Columbia) and defenders Randy Roy (St. Louis), Myles Hensler (Maryville), Zach Bauer (St. Charles), Ryan Wilhelm (St. Louis), and Mike Jones (St. Peters) all will need to have a good week of practice in order for the Cougars to be successful.
The match is Friday in Springfield, Mo. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
Two days later, the Cougars head to Kansas City, Mo., to take on another challenging team in Rockhurst, 4-0 overall and 1-0 in GLVC play. The Hawks are coming off of a 1-0 road win against Missouri-Rolla.
The defense will once again be called on to stop an offense that is averaging just less than three goals a game. Rockhurst forward Tom Heinmann (St. Louis, Mo.) has scored seven goals in the Hawks' four matches.
"We are confident our defense will challenge both teams more then they are used to," said Huneke.
SIUE showed its offensive prowess in two GLVC contests this past weekend, scoring nine goals in the games. SIUE defeated Kentucky Wesleyan 5-0 and Southern Indiana 4-2. Kevin Bielicki (St. Louis) led the offense with three goals.
