SIUE Heads To Tennessee To Take On CBU
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - After shutting out two NCAA Division I members in two tough preseason matches last week, the No. 7-ranked Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's soccer team heads to Memphis, Tenn., Friday to take on Christian Brothers University.
SIUE is coming off 1-0 wins over Tulsa and Creighton. Tulsa is a member of Conference USA while Creighton is the preseason favorite in the Missouri Valley Conference.
"Historically, games down there have been really challenging for us. We expect it to be a tough way for us to start the regular season," said SIUE Coach Ed Huneke.
This is year marks the 10th consecutive season that the two non-conference rivals have faced off. SIUE's record against Christian Brothers since 1998 is 2-5-2. SIUE and Christian Brothers battled to a 2-2 overtime tie last season at Ralph Korte Stadium.
Game time Friday is 7 p.m.
SIUE's success in the preseason included a pair of shutouts. Goalkeepers Greg Crook (Columbia) and Scott Meyer (Ballwin, Mo.) combined in the net for the Cougars. Matt Harris (St. Charles, Mo.) and Kevin Bielicki (St. Louis) scored the game-winning goals in the victories over Tulsa and Creighton, respectively.
SIUE's first regular season home game is next Friday, Sept. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at Korte Stadium against Kentucky Wesleyan. The game also marks the opening of the Great Lakes Valley Conference season for the Cougars.
