Cougars Face Lewis in GLVC Semis
The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's soccer team is set for a rematch with Lewis University Friday in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament Semifinals.
The Cougars, ranked No. 7 in the nation in the latest NSCAA/NCAA Division II Coaches Poll, advanced to the semifinals with a 3-1 come-from-behind win over the University of Missouri-St. Louis Saturday. The Cougars were led by Dustin Attarian's (St. Louis, Mo.) two goals along with Kevin Bielicki's (St. Louis, Mo.) goal in the second half against UMSL.
"We got over the bump in the road," said SIUE soccer coach Ed Huneke.
Huneke also credits the Cougars' back line of Zach Bauer (St. Charles, Mo.), Mike Zaegel (St. Louis, Mo.) and Randy Roy (St. Louis, Mo.) with a strong defensive showing in the 3-1 victory.
The No. 1-seeded Cougars will face Lewis Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Korte Stadium, which is only one of two GLVC opponents to hand SIUE a loss this season. Lewis defeated SIUE 1-0 in Romeoville despite SIUE outshooting the Flyers 20-15.
"They (Lewis) have some good players who penetrate, but we don't get overly reactive to most opponents stars. If we play our game, they should adjust to us," said Huneke.
If the Cougars can fend off Lewis they will play Sunday in the tournament championship game at noon versus the winner of the UW-Parkside and Northern Kentucky game. UWP and NKU face off Friday in the other semifinal game at 5 p.m.
